OUR VOICE MATTERS

Advocacy needed support SB113

It is time to let our voices be heard with our State Senators. A bill is being presented by a Senate Committee on the floor proposing that a Principal be added to the State Board of Education. They already have community members, a student, a parent, and a teacher on the board but currently lacks representation from school leaders. We have been fighting for years to get a principal on the State Board,as Principals play a critical role in bridging policy and practice, ensuring the success of both students and educators. SB0113/HB0129 update

If you believe we need a principal on the State Board of Education to speak for YOU and our many dedicated school-based administrators now is the time to make a final push to get our bill to a vote!

Why It Matters

We are in the final weeks of the 2025 Maryland General Assembly.  The current session ends on April 7th.  Our bill to put a principal on the State Board of Education has had hearings in the Senate and House of Delegates.  The final step is to get it to the floor of both for a vote.

Read the bill here.

What’s Next?

The number one person who can make that happen is Senate President Bill Ferguson.

Bill Ferguson (District 46, Baltimore City)

You can also email Speaker of the House, Adrienne Jones with the same request.  The House Bill number is 0129.

Adrienne Jones (District 10, Baltimore County)

Ask them to bring SB0113/HB0129 to the floor for a vote.  Your email doesn't have to be long and should focus on WHY our bill makes sense.

I know you are busy, but you can also reach out to senators and delegates who serve your district.  Their information can be found here.

If they hear from enough of us, we have a better chance of having our bill voted on.

Thanks in advance for your support and advocacy on behalf of all Maryland school leaders. Remember-your voices matter!

What can you do?

Contact members of the EEE committee requesting that they give a “favorable report” for SB113.  Your emails should be brief and include why you think MSDE needs a sitting principal on the State Board of Education.
